Talk Back
The artwork made for the Charles Allis Museum’s "Talk Back" exhibition connects the museum's archives to my “Incantation” series. I drew inspiration for these paintings from medieval religious practices, specifically Celtic protection charms or loricas. When cast, the spell grants divine protection. The name of the charm comes from Roman Soldier's armor, specifically the protective breastplate. Each painting holds a weapon from the museum’s collection.
Ecstasy & Escape at the Swan Song Motel
These paintings were created for a solo show with the Museum of Wisconsin Art’s satellite location at the Saint Kate Art Hotel. The exhibition centers the imaginary Swan Song Motel. The first place a person might flee violence is to a motel. I have. Those borrowed rooms are gateways. They are portals to transformation, fantasy, disappearance, and denial.
Past Work:
Manica Deprica
The Paintings placed in the land of Manica Deprica depict dreamy rituals with a medieval edge. Bodies are menaced by tiny men and their demons. These paintings were made for solo booth shows at both Spring/Break New York 2021 and Los Angeles 2022.
Traumatica Dramatica
“Traumatica Dramatica” addresses violence against women as well as the historical precedent of emotional and physical violence against women throughout the canon of art history. The work depicts a reverence for fragility and humanity while examining questions about gender, sexuality, class, sacrifice, pain, sickness, loneliness, and most of all—violence and its haunting memories. Interior Violence
“Interior Violence” features paintings tied together by an installation inclusive of toys, heart-shaped shag carpets, lamps, astroturf, pink walls, and the ghost of Virginia Woolf. The paintings portray a far-away realm, in the not so very distant future, where femmes with traumatic pasts magically grow into giants. Frame by frame, we travel with them as they hunt for new homes that might fit their newly massive bodies. View selected works from this body of work, created in 2020.
